They stopped at a table in a back corner of the room. Jai saw that

Javan was pushing a cup of red tea toward the man seated opposite

him. The man, Varian, reached out a trembling hand and lifted the cup

to his lips. After taking a deep drink, he looked up at Rom with blurry

eyes. Jai could see the shame on Varian’s face.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know anything.” Varian’s voice was a low

tremble. “I didn’t even know Brax was here. He didn’t speak to me at

all.”

Rom made an exclamation of disgust. “I’m not surprised. Varian,

sober up and get back to the Tower. I want to see you first thing in the

morning.”

Shamefacedly, the other man nodded his head.

Javan stood. “I guess all we can do is wait here for Brax to

return.”

“I agree.”

Jai glared at his brother and his brother’s bondmate. “I refuse to

sit here doing nothing. I’m going to find Brax.” He didn’t wait for

either man to react. Turning, he pushed his way through the crowd

and out the front door. Javan and Rom were hot on his heels.

“Wait, Jai. You’re being ridiculous.” He heard Javan’s voice

behind him. He ignored it, running into the stable and calling for the

stableboy.

The boy darted out.

“Boy, did you see a man wearing a brown cloak leave not too long

ago? He was riding a black gelding with a white blaze across its

forehead.”

The boy nodded. “Yes, sir. He left about fifteen minutes past. He

took the south road following that other fellow.”’

“Do you know where that other fellow lives?”

The boy nodded. “He comes here a lot. Stays at an old farm two

or three miles down the road. You can’t miss it. It has a big old larkin

tree near the road where you turn.”
